Perspective Drawing

Perspective Drawing

The task for this week was to create a perspective drawing, which draws the viewers eyes either down a one, two or three point perspective picture. The purpose of this task is to ensure a perspective depth can be drawn.

Approach

My first idea to create was a hallway which created a one point perspective. However, I wanted to create more of a challenge for myself. My next thought was creating a stairway, which was more difficult than a hallway. I discovered this during the process of creating the stairway. As I had to accurately measure how far each step would be away from each other, and also how wide each individual step would be, to make sure the drawing accurately portrayed a staircase. This was the biggest challenge of this drawing, and I attempted the creation of the stairway multiple times. This was a very trial and error method. However, I am happy how the proportions of the stairway turned out.

Inspiration

I drew inspiration for the stairway from M. C. Escher’s ‘Relativity’ (Escher, 1953). Although this painting is not a perspective piece, I was intrigued how the painting made me follow each individual staircase across the painting. I hoped to recreate some element from this painting into my own drawing.

Skills Learned

Learning how perspective drawings can guide the viewers eye towards a certain point or places was interesting. There are two ways in which this can be achieved. One method is using a high contrast in a picture which can divert the viewers eye by simply making a portion of the picture appear lighter than the other portion. Secondly, the other method in which a picture can guide the viewers eyes towards one place is by using Rhythm. Using Rhythm will have the elements of the picture point towards one direction. One example is using a road and a path which will join together to create the Rhythm flow of a picture.

Improvement

One way in which I could improve my perspective drawing would be to make the stairway longer. I would argue that the stairway is too short and does not offer a full suitable perspective for the viewer. My reason being that a perspective picture should offer the viewer and endless perspective. However, in this instance with a stairway I did experiment with a longer stairway, yet this was very difficult to create. As the longer stairway did not look natural from the angle of the picture. Whilst some of the steps are too close to each other, and they do not match the flow of the previous steps.
