Anatomy

This weeks art piece was to create a character design which shows our understanding of anatomy. Below is my exploration of the topic.

Approach

My vision for this piece was to create a character which showed the muscles on the top half of their body. I set out to show where the muscles of each limb were, and how they can be accentuated from the character flexing their muscles. The character is wearing jeans, but still shows their leg muscles bulging underneath the fabric.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this piece was a common bodybuilders pose (Gruev, 2021). This inspiration instantly came to mind, and the pose was used as a reference for my character design. The pose below was perfect for my character design, as the majority of muscles on the body were shown, whilst the pose also included a line of action.

Skills Learned

Whilst carrying out this task I have learned the fundamentals of anatomy of the human body. Learning how the gesture of a character will show off the different muscles of the body, is a valuable fundamental. Moreover, learning how to simplify the design is a must. For example, a good way to start a design is to use a reference as a guide, and then use your own knowledge of where you think the muscles on the body will be located. After this, you can then look at the reference to see how close you were with your design. These steps will speed up the process of learning, and you will gain knowledge of the anatomy of the human body.

Improvement

This anatomy character design could be improved by adjusting the proportions of the characters limbs. For example, I believe that the characters head is too small for this body, whilst their upper half of their body seems to be too small for their legs. If I were to recreate this piece I would also show the muscles on their legs, instead of the character wearing clothing on their legs. Although, the muscles are slightly shown underneath the piece of clothing, they could be shown in more detail.
